Usage in Pregnancy
Progesterone in pregnancy can be used for the following:
~ For development of the endometrium and secrete fluids after being primed by estrogen.
~ Maintains the functions of the placenta and fights off unwanted cells located near the womb
that could cause placenta damage.
~ Maintains thickness of endometrium.
~ Prevents spontaneous movements of the uterus.
~ Creates a nutrient rich environment for the baby by increasing glycogen and arterial blood
to the lining of the uterus.
~ Stimulates breast tissue growth.
~ Along with estrogen, it prevents lactation until after birth.
~ Strengthens the mucus plug aiding in preventing infection.
~ Gives strength to the pelvic walls - preparing for labor.
~ Stops uterus from contracting.
At the end of pregnancy, the levels of progesterone secreted by the placenta drop. This will
stimulate contractions leading to birth.
To sustain through the
early stages of pregnancy,
a minimum level of 10ng/ml is usually required.
Doctors measure through blood, the progesterone level to diagnose abnormal pregnancies like
ectopic pregnancy.
Natural progesterone is sometimes prescribed as a fertility treatment.
It is also used to reduce the
risk of
miscarriage.
In the
second trimester of pregnancy,
as well as the
third trimester,
doses can be given of
17P shots to prevent preterm labor.
