Chemical Pregnancy:

Miscarriage

What is a Chemical pregnancy?

Chemical pregnancy is a miscarriage which happens within a week or so of the menstrual period that is due. It is a very early miscarriage. In so many cases, a woman has received a positive pregnancy test result before her period was due, but then a miscarriage occured well before an ultrasound would actually be able to pick up a heartbeat.

These pregnancies are often overlooked as a period that is heavy, or one that seems to have lasted much longer than normal. Usually this type of miscarriage can be discovered if the woman is actively trying to conceive and charting her fertility signs.

Today, there are so many extremely sensitive pregnancy tests that can have positive results 3-5 days before your period is to arrive. There is however a downfall to this. Women become excited that they are pregnant and then discover that a miscarriage of this type has taken place. Very early test results show chemical pregnancies that would not have been detected had she held off until her period arrived.

Chemical pregnancies are pretty common. 50-60% of first pregnancies end in miscarriage in very early in pregnancy. Many times when this happens and the woman never knows she was even pregnant.

What are some of the causes?
Most are due to chromosomal issues in the fetus.

~ Low progesterone
~ Genetic problems
~ Immune issues
~ Insufficient uterine lining
~ an obstruction in the uterus ie: (depending on location) Fibroid tumors

Prevention:
Most chemical pregnancies cannot be prevented. Some doctors will decide to go ahead and start a patient on treatments such as: Vitamin B6, heparin, aspirin, progesterone, clomid. Immune testing and genetic counseling may be recommended as well. Consult with your doctor to find out what treatment is best for you.
